God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit. This included a healing anointing with which He healed the sick.
The healing anointing was the power of the Holy Spirit flowing through Jesus to drive sickness out of people’s bodies and is available today through the same Holy Spirit that comes upon us. The healing power of God is able to destroy sickness and restore the human body to health.
:38 “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
In verse 38, Peter summarises what Jesus did while on the earth, connecting it directly to the anointing. Two things stood out to Peter about Jesus. Jesus (1) did good and (2) healed all oppressed by the devil.
Jesus did these things by the anointing which God gave Him.
If it was not God’s will to heal, why would He anoint Jesus to heal?
Healing was important to God, so He anointed Jesus to heal.
The Greek word here for ‘healing’ is ‘Iaomai’ meaning to cure (literally or figuratively), heal, make whole’. It shows that the healing referred to here is both literal and figurative. In other word it is all encompassing, covering everything that needed healing, from physical sicknesses to internal conditions.
God specifically anointed Jesus for the purpose of healing people because God wants people healed. It was a healing anointing, power which drove sickness out.
Went about doing…
What did Jesus do on the earth?
According to Peter, he went about doing good and healing. ‘Went about’ means wherever He went, he did these things.
:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.
Notice the same wording here, ‘Jesus went about…’. What does this verse tell us Jesus went about doing? Teaching, preaching and healing. This is what God anointed Him to do because God wanted those things done.
Jesus did not…
Jesus did not go about doing bad and making people sick. He did not do leave people sick. Instead, He healed people everywhere He went because that is what God wanted Him to do with the anointing.
The fact that God anointed Him to heal shows that God wanted to heal. To say anything else would be to contradict the Bible and add things into the Bible that it does not say.

The Healing Anointing upon Jesus
Luke talks about Jesus’ first sermon where He referred to this anointing. We see the exact same thing in this passage. This passage also shows it was a healing anointing.
:16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
:17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
:18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
:19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”
:20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
:21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (NKJV)
Jesus did not just read a passage from Isaiah 61. He said the verse was fulfilled showing He was the fulfilment of Isaiah’s prophecy. The Spirit of the Lord was upon Jesus and everything in that passages referred to Him.
The passage lists why God anointed Jesus (the purpose for that anointing). ‘Because’ means ‘for this reason’.
- preach the Gospel
- heal the Broken hearted
- proclaim liberty to the Captives
- bring recovery of sight to the blind
- set the oppressed free
Why did the Anointing come upon Jesus?
No where in this list does Jesus say He was anointed to hurt people. He does not say He was anointed to make people sick and suffer, or to bring them into captivity.
The anointing brings freedom and healing to people, which is the same as what Peter said in Acts. The purpose of the anointing is to heal and set free. It is a healing anointing, not a sickness anointing!
Why would the Spirit of the Lord come upon Jesus for the specific reason to heal and set people free, if God did not want that for them?
False Ideas about God
Through the centuries, man has come up with all kinds of ideas about God, and some have been taught in churches as if they were true. People have taught that God is behind pain, sickness and suffering, that He causes bondage in people’s lives.
However, the ministry of Jesus a complete contradicts these teachings of man. Jesus came to bring the exact opposite, and remember Jesus is God in visible form.
- Does God want the broken hearted healed? It certainly seems so, since He anointed Jesus for the purpose of healing the broken hearted.
- Does God want to set captives free? Again, clearly this is a yes, since Jesus was anointed by God to proclaim liberty to captives
- Does God want the eyes of the blind opened or would God prefer they remain blind? God anointed Jesus to open blind eyes because that is what God wants.
- What about the oppressed? The answer is the same. God wants them set free, not to stay in their oppression, so He anointed Jesus to set them free.
A Healing Anointing
God specifically anointed Jesus to heal, set free and deliver. It was a healing anointing. If God didn’t want those things for people, He would not have done them through Jesus. The purpose for the anointing upon Jesus was to heal and set people free.
In Acts, Peter summarised Jesus’ ministry by saying He did two things with the anointing: (1) heal (2) do good. Luke shows the anointing is to heal and set free. Matthew says Jesus went about healing.

The Healing Anointing Today
God gives healing anointing to heal and set people free. It is the same today. God’s power has not changed.
The message has not changed today. We are still presenting to people what God does through Jesus. Ours is not a new message. The Gospel has not been edited or changed through the centuries.
Anyone who believe the Gospel message can receive its power to heal, rescue, save, deliver and bring freedom.
The great commission in Mark 16 instructs believers to lay hands on the sick and they will recover. This indicates that believers have a degree of healing power in their hand.
That healing anointing has the same purpose today as it had in Jesus time: to heal, set free and deliver people. God gave the healing anointing to Jesus because He wants people healed. He still gives His healing power today through believers because He still wants the same thing.
